From catching that prize fish, surfing the waves, exploring underwater, or even just a humble family picnic. There is a Whangarei Beach for everyone ocean adventure from the idyllic Whale Bay's white sand, to the mystical Mermaid Pools.

Ruakaka Beach

30 minutes from Whangarei, Ruakaka's long white sandy beach is a sublime spot. While it’s known as one of the finest surfing beaches in the whole of Northland it offers something for everyone. The fishing here is good, and if you fail to catch something the local fish and chip store is great. Throughout the summer the beach is patrolled by the Ruakaka Lifesaving Club. This means Ruakaka Beach is excellent and safe for all kinds of water sports and activities, from swimming to stand up paddle boarding.

Whale Bay

Sitting on the Tutukaka Coast, Whale Bay is an extraordinary beach tucked away from the road. Escape everything on white sand, with clear blue waters, and backed by beautiful pohutukawa trees. To reach Whale Bay, walk down 15 minutes from Matapouri Road.

This spot is great for picnicking and exploring the rock pools. The famous mermaid pools are famous for bathers. It can be a bit more private than some of the other beaches in the area, which is why we love it so much!
